MATCH REPORT: Sutton back to league action with a win

Sutton Bonington FC playing against Dunton & Broughton Utd FC

Sutton played their first game in the league since October and beat Dunton & Broughton 2-0.

Sutton welcomed Dunton & Broughton to the Playing Fields looking to improve on the 2-0 loss earlier in the season away from home.

Illness to regular number 1, Horvath, meant Jake Benson stepped up between the sticks. A back three of Sam Orton, Max Benson and Ollie Smith flanked by wing backs Connor Martin and Cain Collins completed the defence. A double pivot in midfield of Joe Shaw and Sam Gee with top scorer Jordan Crosland in a more advanced midfield role, supporting the two up front, James Dann and Joe Brown.

Sutton started the game well, dominating possession and having a lot of space all over the park. Despite this, they struggled to create many clear-cut chances.

With the end of the first half looming, a good run from Crosland and a pass across the box found Jimmy Dann by himself inside the area. He wrong footed the keeper and slotted a cool finish into the near post to put Sutton 1-0 up in the 43rd minute.

Half time came and the chat from manager Jack Tormey was “more of the same”. The second half was similar to the first. Sutton dominating the ball and the space but not quite getting the killer pass correct. Numerous quick balls over the top failed to find their targets.

In the 78th minute Sutton sealed the 3 points. Some fantastic work from skipper Connor Martin found Joe Brown inside the area. Another cool finish past the Dunton keeper put Sutton 2 to the good. Sutton had a few more half chances before the game ended but couldn’t convert them.

Final score 2-0 to Sutton and an important 3 points, moving Sutton 12 points clear of bottom club Barrow Town Reserves and Sutton have 5 games in hand over the 3 sides above them.
